Canberra Reptile Zoo

Our 5-Year Sustainable Climate Action Plan

At Canberra Reptile Zoo, conservation isn?t just about the animals we protect ? it?s also about how we operate as an organisation. We believe in leading by example, reducing our environmental impact, and showing our visitors that even small, practical changes can make a big difference for our planet.

What We?ve Achieved So Far

We?re proud of the sustainability steps we?ve already taken:

150 solar panels installed, significantly cutting our reliance on fossil fuels.

Water recycling initiative: water from reptile enclosures is treated and reused to irrigate our gardens.
Rainwater harvesting: large exhibits are refilled with recycled rainwater collected in on-site tanks.
Composting program: uneaten animal food is turned into compost instead of going to landfill.
Energy-efficient lighting: over 100 old lights have been replaced with LED technology, reducing power use by more than 60%.
Smart lighting controls: remote-operated systems ensure lights are switched off when not needed, reducing waste.

These actions have already lowered our energy use, reduced emissions, and improved the way we care for both animals and the environment.

Our Next 5 Years of Action

Refrigeration & Equipment
Replacing older animal food freezers and fridges with modern, high-efficiency models.
Introducing regular maintenance checks to ensure seals and thermostats are working at peak efficiency.

Heating & Cooling
Phasing out our gas heating system and replacing it with an electric reverse cycle system powered by our solar array.
Adjusting thermostat use to save up to 10% on energy for every degree of change.
Closing windows and doors during operation to maximise efficiency.

Hot Water
Installing a heat pump system in the kitchen to halve the energy used for hot water.

Water Management
Continuing to expand our rainwater harvesting tanks.
Using drip irrigation in gardens to minimise water waste.
Growing our recycled water initiative to keep gardens and habitats thriving while reducing mains water use.

Everyday Habits
Switching off equipment at the power point when not in use.
Monitoring fridge and freezer temperatures to ensure they run at the most efficient levels.
Training staff and volunteers to follow simple efficiency practices daily.

⸻

Our Goals by 2030
Reduce energy consumption by 30%.
Lower greenhouse gas emissions across all operations.
Increase water recycling and rainwater use throughout the zoo.
Engage visitors in sustainability education by showcasing our initiatives.

⸻

Why It Matters

Every action we take is part of a bigger commitment: protecting Australia?s unique wildlife for generations to come. By making our zoo more sustainable, we?re not just saving resources ? we?re inspiring our community to take part in climate action too.

When you visit Canberra Reptile Zoo, you?re supporting a not-for-profit organisation that is committed to conservation, education, and a more sustainable future.
